About Us
Jorgen Busby is a retired Captain with 25 years of service on Molokai with the Maui County Fire Department. Malia (McPherson) Busby is a 2nd Grade teacher with 24 years of service in the Hawaii State Department of Education. In the summer of 2021, they inherited approximately two acres of ancient taro patches from Malia's kupuna that had been left fallow for over a decade. Together with their daughters Hulali and Li'ula, and trusted advisor James Stone, the Busbys have since restored 14 wetland taro patches and 1 dryland taro patch, from which they feed the Molokai community fresh poi and table kalo on a bi-monthly basis. They also host school field trips and volunteer work days to help connect, educate, and encourage people to preserve and perpetuate the cultivation of this culturally significant Hawaiian staple crop.
Practices
Haloa o Honouliwai is a lo'i kalo (wetland taro) farm owned and operated by the Busby 'Ohana on the East End of Molokai next to Honouliwai Stream. Only organic materials and natural practices are used to grow two main varieties of kalo (Kapa'aloa and Moi).
